The HVAC Sheet Metal/Ductwork Installer is a critical, field-based role designed to execute the physical installation, fabrication, and modification of air distribution infrastructure across Flo-Rite Mechanical’s commercial projects. By applying precise technical craftsmanship, reading detailed blueprint specifications, and ensuring tight system seals, this specialist guarantees that newly installed systems meet design airflow requirements safely and efficiently. This role is essential for transforming engineering designs into functional, high-performing mechanical realities while upholding our standard for "one-and-done" structural reliability.
Scope of Responsibilities
- Field Installation & Assembly: Measure, cut, bend, and assemble sheet metal ductwork, spiral pipe, round pipe, and flexible duct systems on commercial construction and retrofit job sites.
- Blueprints & Submittals: Read and interpret architectural, mechanical, and structural blueprints, submittals, and shop drawings to accurately route layout runs around building obstructions.
- Hanging & Support systems: Securely install duct hangers, straps, trapezes, and bracing frameworks in accordance with SMACNA standards and local building codes.
- Component Integration: Install volume dampers, fire dampers, turning vanes, air diffusers, registers, and grilles, ensuring seamless connection points to major commercial air handling units and RTUs.
- System Sealing & Testing: Apply duct sealant, gaskets, and foil tapes to guarantee airtight joints, minimizing static pressure loss and optimizing energy efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of an HVAC sheet metal apprenticeship program or trade school certification is highly preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Expert capability in using sheet metal hand tools (snips, hand seamers, crimpers) and power equipment. Swiftly navigate digital project prints and log daily jobsite asset adjustments within internal software systems.
- Methodology: Strong technical foundation in duct construction standards, air balancing fundamentals, and geometry for field fabrications.
- Soft Skills: Proven ability in cross-functional job site collaboration and clear peer-to-peer communication, aligning with our core values.
Alignment with Core Values (TRACI)
- Teamwork: Coordinate seamlessly with sheet metal fabricators, helpers, and commercial service technicians to ensure clean project handovers.
- Respect: Value the safety and hard work of fellow tradesmen on active construction sites, keeping work zones clean and organized.
- Accountability: Own the structural integrity and precision of every layout run, focusing on rapid field corrections over placing blame.
- Communication: Proactively notify the jobsite superintendent or operations manager regarding print discrepancies or field layout obstructions.
- Integrity: Ensure all duct seals, hanging supports, and materials are installed truthfully to spec, never taking shortcuts hidden behind insulation or dry-wall ceilings.
